    concept character design workshop 1

    concept character design workshop 1

    hi everyone.

ok, let start a basic concept character design workshop today.
we just do some rough basic concept character developments.
time to refresh the brain and start some thumbnail sketching.
let do about 10-20 concept thumnails.
the more you do the better ideas you have.

we work it out with few steps at this process.

you can either do it analogue or digital way.
but what i done here is digital.

    title : concept character design

    tool: wacom tablet intous 3
    software: photoshop cs

    today let's work on wolverine!
he is one of the character from marvel comic and also x-men team member.

    * this is just a sample lesson, you may change the character into any other person/hero.

    STAGE 1

    - let start with some silhoutte concept thumbnails.
    - this is very important stage of preparing the thumbnails.
    - the more thumbnail design you got the better result you have.
    - just sketch some concept using a few basic color. i usually just use one or two colors. i want to save some time by switch few colors here and there. overall it is just the concept thumbnails.

    * remember here, please draft/sketch as much as you can in the shortest periods and try to have few pose/action with it.

    STAGE 2

    - now we come to final all the thumbnail that we have work.
    - choose the best one here. (but sometime the one from you doesn't mean to everyone.)

    STAGE 3

    - now work on the final selection of yours with new page/layer.
    - focus on the important development of your character.

    * since we doing the wolverine now, i m sure it is the claws, facial, hair and the semi muscular body that need to focus. forget those claws, you can add on at the final panel.
now let save some time working on the proper character in action.

    - create a lighting source at the beginning stage will help a lot here.
    - follow the lighting source that you create and work out the character in some basic brush stroke.

    * for the basic character concept work, the detailing is not much need. just the basic and thing need to highlight. don't spend a few hours drawing on something too detailing, overall it is just rough basic character concept stage.

    STAGE 4

    - and finally just highlight the detail and ask yourself what is missing on your character concept?
    - it is what you/client want?
    - need to re-do?
    - highlight enough?

ok, here is my wolverine on this workshop sessions.
it took me around 40 minutes to complete.
    just the basic character pose/action.
after you finish your character concept, keep/save it.

also in note, size do matter in this process.
if too small you can't spot the detail and too big it take you lot of time to complete!
just use your best judgement in this stage.
a different size also give a different views.
above are the sample of my two different sizes from the same work.

and also don't throw away your previous thumbnail collection, you may not need it now but it still can be use for future ref.

until now that is the basic character concept design.
see again in next workshop sessions.
    thank you.

all the questions and comments are welcome.

in this case,it's grayscale for the artwork
which means using gray, black and also white
in a way it's a good way to work on the values
